I am Death, destroyer of worlds.
- Bhagavad Gita
"I am Death, destroyer of worlds." It was reported that Oppenheimer, the director of the Manhattan Project, was reminded of this quote after seeing an atomic bomb explode during "Trinity," the bomb test in New Mexico. It was obvious the Oppenheimer instantly regretted the creation of the atomic bomb after seeing the potential destruction of such a weapon. He most likely felt that the deaths of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were on his head, a large weight to carry on one's shoulders. After the bombings in Japan, Oppenheimer made it clear that he was completely against the creation of any similarly destructive bombs. He was offered work on several more projects, however, he turned the down for moral reasons. He often participated in protests against projects working towards the development of new bombs, and his security clearance into the establishment where research took place was revoked.
